I am: self-employed!!! I love working for myself because I more often get to have creative control over what I do.
What I do: I have been a designer of some sort since I finished college. I draw illustrations in my own cartoony style for books and websites. I design logos, books and posters, cartoon characters for animated TV shows, and information graphics (diagrams and charts) for newspapers and magazines. You can actually see my work at www.lalenafisher.com. I've worked as a designer for the TV shows The Wonder Pets and Blue’s Clues and for The New York Times and The Houston Chronicle newspapers.
My "career path": I am one of those lucky people who knew when I was 9 or 10 what I wanted to do—I was going to be an artist. However, I wasn’t aware of all the various careers one could have in art. My parents didn’t really know much about careers in art either, so they couldn’t guide me. After college, when I started getting art-related jobs, I figured out that I liked illustration and design and could work in it.
My favorite things outside of work: I write songs and play guitar and bass. My most recent rock band was The Color Guard: www.thecolorguard.com! Our songs are on iTunes too.
Tips for a successful girlfuture:
• Don’t let fear of failure stop you from taking exciting opportunities, or taking on new challenges.
• Most things in life that are worthwhile are also hard at times. That goes for not only jobs, but relationships too. So the important thing is to learn to recognize the things that fulfill you enough to make hard work worthwhile.
