I am: artistic, compassionate, logical, whimsical
What I do: I am the principal flute player of the chamber orchestra, which means that I play the solo flute line (often the highest or melodic part in the orchestra), soaring over the other instruments. It feels like flying! I’m also teach private lessons and classes in orchestral flute music to students at the University of Minnesota School of Music. My favorite part of my job is playing some of the greatest, most exciting music ever written (Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, etc.) and getting to come up with my own interpretation of it.
My “career path”: I heard the flute when I was four or five years old and fell in love with the sound. I started taking private lessons in fourth grade and played in a youth orchestra when I was in high school. I majored in music performance in college and then auditioned to get my position in the orchestra.
My favorite things outside of work: My family – my husband, son, daughter, and step-daughter. I also really enjoy taking ballet class and reading novels.
Tips for a successful girlfuture:
• Visualize how you would like to be in your adult life and go for it. You have the power to create the person you want to be.
• Stay in touch with what’s happening in the world. Your generation will have to deal with many problems such as global warming, health care and world poverty. You can learn an amazing amount by reading the front section of the New York Times every day (you can read it online).
