A little background on Zines

2/15/2010 By: Victoria Garcia image for blog: A little background on Zines

Since we've been talking about zines and how important they've been for girls and women, I thought that this news was interesting!

Kathleen Henna, a really famous and important singer from the punk rock band, Bikini Kill, just donated all her zines to the New York University Library! The zines are a part of the library's brand new Riot Grrrrl Collection. Riot Grrrrrls were a bunch of punk girls that decided to do things that they normally were kept from doing because "girls don't do stuff like that." They formed their own punk bands, wrote and published their own zines, created their own art and so many other things! (You can read more about who Riot Grrrrls were by clicking here.)

The library (and Kathleen Henna!) thought that it was important to collect and figure out all the work that riot grrrrls have done through the years. Having a huge collection of work in one place will make it easier for researchers and educators and even girls to study the work and really learn from it. And even more importantly, this collection proves that girls who are powerful and strong enough to do something everybody says they shouldn't are important and very necessary to the world!

When you create your own zines or music or art, you are joining thousands of other girls who think their voices are important and must be heard. And who knows? One day you may be like Kathleen Henna--a powerful leader of your own punk band donating all your writing to a huge university!
