I love Nickelodeon, and as a young girl, I would spend hours in front of the television watching Taina, a show about a young, Latina aspiring actress living in New York City. Taina was an everyday American teen. She was smart, witty, and knew how to get herself out of sticky situations. I wanted to be just like her.
Today, I spend a lot less time watching television, but when I do I am usually tuning in to my two favorite shows, iCarly and True Jackson VP. Carly and True represent a young generation of girls who are intelligent and strong willed. They are positive role models in a time when the negativity of Gossip Girl and 90210 rules our television screens. Carly and True show their female viewers the importance of education, friendship, and self-confidence instead of focusing on frienemies, sex, alcohol, and popularity. True and Carly are girls who aren’t afraid to be funny, show their intellect, and have a less dramatic good time.
True Jackson is a 15-year-old girl who landed a job as vice president for a clothing design company called MadStyle. Despite the fact she is constantly challenged by co-workers who underestimate her talent as a designer, True proves to be strong and inventive. What I love most about this show is that True is very bright, and she knows how to juggle her job, her friendships, and her school work. That doesn’t mean she doesn’t face challenges, though. But when she does, she figures out how to get out of tough situations. True is powerful because she uses her mind to get what she wants and she does it with style and humor.
Carly Shay has her own web show called iCarly, which she runs with her best friends, Sam and Freddie. Carly is kind, spunky, and in control. Her positive personality shines, even when she gets into painful situations. Carly shows girls that, despite being young, you’re still pursuing your dreams, and with effort, persistence, and the mutual support of your friends, you can be successful. Carly lets young girls know that anything is possible. Her power comes from her positive attitude, self-confidence, and ability to have fun.
True and Carly are amazing examples of powerful girls, and even though their careers are highly unlikely for a regular teenage girl, the message these shows send is important. Showing girl television characters who have successful careers allows real girls to imagine that even the most unlikely dreams are possible. True and Carly don’t have to use their bodies to seem cool like the girls on other shows because their personalities shine all on their own.
